Introduction
India is the largest producer and consumer of cumin seed in the world. It
is an important spice in a large number of Indian preparations.
Area of Cultivation
In India, cumin seed is almost exclusively cultivated in Rajasthan and Gujarat.
Season
In India, cumin seed is a Rabi crop sown in October - November and harvested

Cultivation
According to the Department of Agricultural Research and Education, ICAR,
Government of India, irrigation at IW/CPE ratio of 1.0 and application of
90 kg N and 30 g P2O5 /ha for fennel and irrigation
at IW/CPE ratio of 1.0, N @ 90kg/ha and P @ 60 kg/ha has been recommended
for cumin in Gujarat.
Research Support
Commercial exploitation as well as support from research and development
agencies for cumin seeds has been very minimal.
